Montgomery: Lions ‘Don’t Make Mistakes’ With Coaching Hires.D

Detroit Lions’ Offseason Coaching Changes Set the Stage for Big Expectations

The Detroit Lions have undergone significant changes to their coaching staff this offseason, with more shifts expected as multiple positions remain unfilled. Among the most notable moves is the hiring of a new offensive coordinator to replace Ben Johnson. John Morton, who was part of the Lions’ coaching staff in 2022, returns to Detroit to take on this key role, bringing fresh energy and expertise to the offense.

A Return to Familiarity with John Morton

Morton’s return to Detroit is a pivotal moment in the Lions’ coaching reshuffle. During his previous stint with the team in 2022, Morton was instrumental in helping implement the offensive scheme under Ben Johnson’s leadership. That year marked Johnson’s first season as the offensive coordinator, and Morton’s input played a vital role in establishing the team’s offensive identity. Now, Morton inherits a potent running game featuring one of the league’s most dynamic tandems in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.

Though Montgomery has yet to meet Morton in person, as the two were not in Detroit at the same time during Morton’s last tenure, he remains confident in the positive impact Morton will have on the team. Montgomery emphasized that the Lions’ coaching staff, led by Head Coach Dan Campbell and General Manager Brad Holmes, is meticulous in their decisions, always prioritizing how new hires will fit within the organization’s culture.

High Hopes for an Explosive Backfield

When fully healthy, Montgomery and Gibbs offer the Lions one of the most explosive ground games in the NFL. Both players surpassed 1,000 all-purpose yards last season, and Montgomery was on track for his second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing campaign before an injury sidelined him for the final three regular-season games.

Montgomery and Gibbs share a strong bond and an ambitious vision for their future together. Both players have expressed their desire to be remembered as the greatest running back duo in NFL history, a goal that fuels their drive heading into the 2025 season.

A Special Duo with Big Aspirations

Montgomery is full of praise for his backfield partner, Jahmyr Gibbs, highlighting their unique bond and the special dynamic they share on the field. “Definitely the best running back duo in the league,” Montgomery states with confidence. “Me and Jahmyr, that’s my dog. You’ve got to be in a position and a mental headspace to be selfless enough to be appreciative of someone else’s success.”

Acknowledging the competitive nature of both players, Montgomery notes that while it’s natural to want to be the focal point of the offense, they understand the importance of putting the team first. “A lot of people forget that we’re all competitors, we all want to play ball and we all want to be the guy, but sometimes you’ve got to be selfless for the greater good of the team.”

Looking ahead, Montgomery believes their partnership with Gibbs is something truly special. “Being able to be teamed up with somebody of Jahmyr’s magnitude and do it together I think is super special. When it’s all said and done, me and him will be the best running back duo to ever play together.”

With a talented coaching staff, a powerful running game, and high expectations for the 2025 season, the Detroit Lions are poised for exciting things to come. The return of John Morton as offensive coordinator could be the final piece in helping the Lions reach their full potential. For Montgomery and Gibbs, the goal is clear: to make history as one of the NFL’s greatest running back duos.
