Though the Dallas Cowboys’ coaching search has been widely criticized by fans and media members alike due to the lack of candidates interviewed and the fact that the decision was to promote from within, Brian Schottenheimer has been praised so far for the staff he’s built.

Only a few weeks into the job, Schottenheimer has made some key hires from outside the organization that seemingly challenge the way the Cowboys have been doing things recently.

Kyle Adams is the prime example of this, as the new offensive coordinator was part of a very different offense when he coached offensive line for the Arizona Cardinals. The Cowboys major in inside zone when running the football, while Adams was part of one of the most aggressive “gap scheme” attacks in the league. The Cardinals used pulling blockers at the second highest-rate in the league, the Cowboys were 32nd.

The approach to hire people from different schemes instead of doing the “ol’ friend of mine” approach so common in the league has impressed those evaluating Schottenheimer. And it appears Dak Prescott, as well.

“Something else I admire is the way that he went on with the interviewing process,” Prescott told reporters in his first media availability since the Schottenheimer hire. “When you’ve been an assistant for 25 to 30 years, I know there’s a quarterback coach, a receiver coach, a defensive coordinator, and a safety that you can call up without them thinking twice, and they’re going to come work for you. But for him to go through the due diligence of getting the guys in, interviewing them, and then taking it amongst the other guys that are there and making final decisions, I think speaks highly of his approach and the way that he’s going to take care of things.”

Prescott hit the nail in the head: Schottenheimer is showing he’s willing to truly gather football insight from coaches with different profiles. He added Adams, two college football collegiate coaches in Junior Adams (WR) and Conor Riley (OL) while also keeping Lunda Wells (TE) and promoting Steve Shimko to QB coach.

He’ll call the plays but he’ll surround himself of people with varying views to complement his ideas. On paper, it’s a great staff. Now it’s a matter of properly utilizing those points of view, a challenge for a head coach that will also be in charge of calling plays.

“Super excited for him, this opportunity,” Prescott said. “Obviously, I’ve worked with him for the last couple of years, understanding the type of coach he is, the type of man he is, the way that he approaches the game. I think the best way to exemplify that is he’s the son of a legendary football coach—he’s not going to take anything about this game lightly.”

Despite being a first-time head coach, Prescott isn’t expecting Schottenheimer to take it easy on the team.

“He enjoys the work in it, kind of old-fashioned. I’m looking forward to the grind and some things that we’re going to do and he’s going to add. Excited for him. I know he’s ready for it.”
