TRANSFER NEWS: Detroit Lions Expect to Re-Sign Former All-Pro Worth $42 Million – HN

The Detroit Lions may have an opportunity to address their cornerback situation by bringing back a familiar face. With Carlton Davis potentially departing in free agency, the team could be left relying heavily on last year’s rookie cornerbacks. However, a veteran who originally joined the franchise over a decade ago seems open to returning.

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay, currently entering the final year of a $42 million contract, is rumored to be a possible cap casualty this offseason. If he becomes available, Detroit appears to be his preferred landing spot.

During a February 19 interview on The St. Brown Podcast, Slay made it clear that he intends to play at least one more season, ideally with either the Eagles or the Lions. He stated, “For sure the two spots I would love to always be at is Philly or Detroit.”

Drafted 36th overall by Detroit in 2013, Slay enjoyed a successful seven-year tenure with the team. His time in the Motor City included three Pro Bowl selections, an All-Pro nod, and a season where he tied for the league lead in interceptions. Over those years, he amassed 104 pass breakups, 19 interceptions, and 347 tackles.

For the past five seasons, Slay has been a key contributor in Philadelphia, playing an essential role in their recent championship run. Even in his 12th NFL season, he remained highly effective, holding opposing quarterbacks to a 54.7% completion rate and allowing just 6.1 yards per attempt when targeted.

At 34, concerns about a potential decline are valid. However, given the Lions’ current uncertainty at cornerback, a seasoned player like Slay could provide much-needed stability. While Detroit would likely need to make additional moves to strengthen the position, bringing in a six-time Pro Bowler with recent Super Bowl experience could be a smart step toward solidifying their secondary.
