The Dallas Cowboys Face Uncertainty at Right Guard for the First Time in a Decade
Zack Martin’s Retirement Leaves a Huge Void
For the first time in over ten years, the Dallas Cowboys enter the offseason with a major question mark at right guard. Future Hall of Fame offensive lineman Zack Martin has reportedly informed the team of his decision to retire, leaving Dallas without one of the best offensive linemen in franchise history.
Martin’s departure was not entirely unexpected, as he was set to hit free agency if he didn’t re-sign or choose to retire. However, replacing a nine-time Pro Bowler who earned more All-Pro selections (9) than accepted holding penalties (7) throughout his career is no easy task.
Internal Candidates to Step Up
The Cowboys may already have potential replacements on their roster. Brock Hoffman, who started the final seven games of the 2024 season after Martin’s season-ending ankle surgery, is a strong candidate for the role. Hoffman’s aggressive playstyle and ability to anchor the offensive line make him a logical choice.
Another in-house option is T.J. Bass, a former undrafted free agent who has shown flashes of promise in his first two seasons. While he remains an unproven asset, his versatility and potential make him an intriguing backup.
The Draft Could Provide a Long-Term Answer
If Dallas looks to the NFL Draft to replace Martin, they will have some high-caliber prospects to consider. LSU’s Will Campbell, a projected top-10 pick, could transition to the interior line at the next level, providing an elite option at guard. Alabama’s Tyler Booker is another first-round talent who could be available when the Cowboys pick at No. 12.
Salary Cap Limitations May Prevent a Big Free-Agent Signing
With only an estimated $2.5 million in salary cap space, the Cowboys are unlikely to make a major splash in free agency. The team is also expected to prioritize an extension for star pass rusher Micah Parsons, further limiting their financial flexibility.
Instead, Dallas may have to rely on low-cost veteran signings or internal development to solidify the right guard position.

What’s Next for the Cowboys?
The Cowboys must now determine whether they will trust Hoffman to take over Martin’s position or invest in a top prospect in the draft. Whatever decision they make will have a significant impact on the team’s offensive performance in 2025.
While replacing a legend like Zack Martin is a daunting task, the Cowboys must move forward with a plan that ensures stability on the offensive line and keeps their championship hopes alive.
