The Miami Dolphins are facing a perplexing offseason. After aiming to build on their previous playoff appearance, the team underperformed in 2024, concluding the regular season with an 8-9 record and missing the playoffs. This places them in a position to make challenging choices this offseason.
An NFL analyst has proposed that they consider trading their star wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, who experienced one of the least impressive seasons of his career and expressed a desire to leave after the Dolphins’ last regular-season game. NFL.com’s Adam Rank suggests the Dolphins should trade Hill back to the Kansas City Chiefs. Hill attracted negative attention following Miami’s final regular-season match.
With the Dolphins out of playoff contention, Hill couldn’t hide his disappointment and made his infamous “I’m out” remarks. Although Hill later retracted his statement, saying he planned to stay, his dissatisfaction with Miami’s offensive issues in 2024 was evident, ending the season with an Offense+ grade of 76.3 (C).
Miami ranked 20th in points per drive due to Tua Tagovailoa’s inconsistency and injury problems, which led to offensive instability; in Tagovailoa’s absence, the offense struggled significantly, averaging only 13.3 points per game and a -0.23 EPA per play. The Dolphins’ management now faces a tough decision on whether to retain Hill and hope for a bounce-back.
However, Adam Rank believes they should move Hill, and of all places, back to Kansas City. “Tyreek Hill’s public dissatisfaction after a disappointing season for Miami suggested he might be seeking a new team. Although this idea has been somewhat dismissed by comments from Hill and the team, it hasn’t been completely ruled out. I still think trading him, if the deal is favorable, is an intriguing option.” Hill participated in just 12 games last season, recording his lowest receiving total since 2019.
He “did not surpass 12 yards per catch and six touchdowns in the same season for the first time since his rookie year,” and Rank argues he would be ideal for a team “poised to win a Super Bowl,” like the Kansas City Chiefs. “The Chiefs have shown they can claim a Super Bowl title without Hill. However, a noticeable decline in their explosiveness since trading him to Miami in 2022 was apparent in Super Bowl LIX, where they recorded the second-lowest yardage total (275) in Patrick Mahomes’ playoff history.
Kansas City has other priorities, such as enhancing Mahomes’ protection, and rookie Xavier Worthy showed potential. Still, providing Mahomes with more skilled receivers could be wise, particularly with Travis Kelce’s future uncertain. Plus, the Chiefs aren’t hesitant to reacquire former players or explore trade opportunities.” Throughout the 2024 season, the Chiefs lacked a definitive No. 1 receiver. Rookie Xavier Worthy topped Kansas City receivers with 59 receptions and 638 receiving yards, and with Travis Kelce’s future in doubt, bringing Hill back would significantly bolster the Chiefs’ offense.
Hill spent the first six years of his NFL career with the Chiefs after being selected in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft. He achieved four 1,000-yard seasons during his six-year tenure with the Chiefs and was the primary receiver in 2019 when the Chiefs clinched their first Super Bowl title with Mahomes as quarterback.
