The Detroit Lions lost both coordinators this offseason, as offensive coordinator Ben Johnson left to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears, while defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn accepted the New York Jets head coaching position. The Lions replaced Johnson with John Morton and Glenn with Kelvin Sheppard.

Detroit losing both coordinators isn’t ideal, as Johnson and Glenn were two of the best assistant coaches in football and elevated their respective units.

Though there is a ton of concern surrounding the Lions’ coaching staff, superstar edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson isn’t worried about Detroit’s coordinators leaving and instilled a vote of confidence into the players during an appearance on “The Lautners” podcast on Feb.19.

“I don’t care who they bring in to coach us. Obviously keeping Dan there is what we all want. But coordinators, position coaches, it doesn’t matter,” Hutchinson said. “As long as we have the right guys in the locker room and those foundation guys on offense, on defense — you can roll anyone in there to call the plays.

“At the end of the day, it’s going to be the playmakers who are making those plays on Sundays. As long as we keep our core group and keep everyone there, we’re going to stay in this window of winning,” Hutchinson added.

Johnson and Glenn were integral to Detroit’s success, but general manager Brad Holmes has also done a fantastic job building the Lions roster into one of the most deep and talented groups in football.

Hutchinson’s comments may seem like he’s downplaying Johnson and Glenn’s impacts, but the 2022 No.2 overall pick is commending his teammates and has all the right to believe that Detroit will be near the top of the NFC once again next season despite losing valuable coaches.
