The Boston Red Sox may have a problem on their hands.
After signing superstar infielder Alex Bregman last week, there are rumors emerging that current Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers isn’t happy with sliding from third base to designated hitter to accommodate for Bregman.
There’s a world where the Red Sox allow this situation to get completely out of hand. If they do, Devers could demand a trade out of Boston as soon as this season. It’s not very likely, but it’s certainly a growing possibility.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently listed the Philadelphia Phillies as a potential suitor for Devers if the Red Sox end up looking to trade him.
“It feels like next offseason is when Philly might try to engineer another marquee addition, but we can never count out Dave Dombrowski when a big-ticket player hits the market,” Kline wrote. “The Phillies are in an active arms race with Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York in a highly competitive National League. Stacking Devers behind Kyle Schwarber, Turner, and Harper in the lineup would go a long way toward cementing the Phils as bonafide, top-of-the-top contenders.”
Philadelphia has reportedly been in the market for both Bregman and trade target Nolan Arenado. The Phillies have reportedly been open to trading All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm as well, which could be a potential piece of the return for Devers.
The Phillies could make sense, but their farm system might not be deep enough to realistically make a deal happen.
