The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of questions to answer at quarterback. They have just one player under contract in Skylar Thompson, who is far from guaranteed to be on the roster.
So, how does the team move forward with Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, or someone else? General manager Omar Khan says they have spoken to both Fields and Wilson’s representatives, but all options have to be on the table until they have figured out who will be back.
“We’ve had conversations with both Russ’ people and Justin’s representatives,” Khan said. “Ideally, you’d like to sign one of the guys we had last year, but the reality is they’re both free agents.”
Khan expressed no preference toward either quarterback, just that it would be one of those two. On top of that, Khan said the team would like Fields or Wilson signed before free agency begins on March 12.
“In an ideal scenario, you’d like to have this done before the start of the league year,” Khan said. “That impacts who you sign. That impacts the type of receiver you may go after or how you build the rest of the team, so all of that has an effect.”

All of that makes sense. While team president Art Rooney II did note he would like his quarterbacks to align in skill sets, Khan expressed that it might not be possible if negotiations do fall the right way in free agency.
However, they are happy with both Fields and Wilson, and either player returning to the Steelers would satisfy the team with their moves.
On top of that, Khan says both sides have expressed interest in returning to the Steelers.
“I think they understand that,” he said. “I truly believe those guys understand that we want to put whoever the quarterback is under center in the best position to succeed. For us to add our pieces, that’s the first part of this.”
Until someone is under contract, however, Khan notes the Steelers will have to keep all options open, including potentially signing someone else or trading for a player like Matthew Stafford.
“All options are on the table,” Khan said. “We don’t have one of our guys under contract. So I owe it to everyone to keep all options on the table.”
All in all, this sounds consistent with the reports over the last few weeks, where the Steelers continue to be focused internally on their options at quarterback, and it certainly sounds like one of Fields or Wilson will return.
