Philadelphia Phillies Enter Spring Training with Alec Bohm as Their Third Baseman Amid Trade Rumors

Following a disappointing exit in the National League Division Series against the New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies have had a relatively quiet offseason. Instead of making major roster changes, they opted for strategic, low-risk moves, signing outfielder Max Kepler and reliever Jordan Romano to one-year deals. Additionally, they acquired starting pitcher Jesús Luzardo from the Miami Marlins in a high-upside trade. However, the most intriguing decision they made was not a new signing or trade—it was their choice to retain third baseman Alec Bohm despite widespread speculation about his future with the team.

Bohm, entering his fifth season with the Phillies, made significant strides in 2024, earning his first All-Star selection and delivering the type of performance the organization envisioned when they selected him third overall in the 2018 MLB Draft. At 27 years old, he posted career highs in on-base percentage (.332), slugging percentage (.448), and OPS+ (117), all while continuing to reduce his strikeout rate. Even more notably, his defensive improvements were dramatic, going from -5 Outs Above Average in 2023 to +5 in 2024, signaling major growth in his all-around game.

Despite Bohm’s noticeable development, there is a belief within the Phillies organization that he has yet to reach his full potential. Manager Rob Thomson has taken note of his evolving approach and mindset, stating, “(The assistant coaches) said he’s so positive he seems like a different guy, like he’s grown up again. He’s grown up so much since we first brought him to the big leagues. Now, it looks like he’s taken another step. So I’m really excited to see what he can do.”

Thomson’s praise for Bohm’s mentality is especially significant given his past struggles with consistency, both defensively and at the plate. His 1-for-13 performance in the NLDS raised concerns, but the Phillies are optimistic that his continued development will help strengthen their infield and lineup.

As Philadelphia gears up for another playoff push, they will rely on Bohm to maintain his upward trajectory. With core players like Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler, and Trea Turner aging, Bohm’s continued progress could be a key factor in the Phillies’ pursuit of a fourth consecutive postseason appearance.
