NFL free agency is fast approaching, with several intriguing players set to hit the open market. Among the most notable names is Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold. The former first-round pick had a breakout year in his first season with the Vikings, proving himself as a legitimate NFL starter. Darnold led Minnesota to a 14-4 record before falling to the Los Angeles Rams in the playoffs. He originally joined the Vikings on a one-year, $10 million contract as part of his journey through multiple teams.
While Darnold was a key contributor for Minnesota in 2024, a recent free agency prediction by Zack Cook of SportsGrid links him to a struggling NFC team. Cook projects that Darnold will sign with the New Orleans Saints before the 2025 season. The NFL free agent market officially opens on March 12.
Last season, Darnold threw for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns while completing 66.2% of his passes. In the Vikings’ final game—a 27-9 Wild Card loss to the Rams—he recorded 245 yards, one touchdown, and a 62.5% completion rate. A move to New Orleans would pair him with first-year head coach Kellen Moore, a respected offensive strategist. Moore took over after the Saints fired Dennis Allen following a disappointing 5-12 season.
