The Los Angeles Lakers, currently sitting as the Western Conference’s No. 4 seed with a 35-21 record, are already looking ahead to the offseason to address a critical weakness: their lack of depth at the center position. Despite the dynamic duo of Luka Doncic and LeBron James leading the charge, the team’s interior defense and rebounding could become a liability in the playoffs. Recent reports suggest the Los Angeles Lakers are eyeing a summer trade for New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson, a move that could significantly bolster their roster.
Robinson, a 26-year-old, 7-foot center, has been a consistent force in the NBA when healthy. His 2019-20 season was historic, as he shot an NBA-record 74.2% from the field, showcasing his efficiency around the rim. Though injuries have plagued his career, Mitchell Robinson’s impact on the court is undeniable. In the 2023-24 season, he averaged 5.6 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 1.1 blocks in just 31 games. His ability to finish lobs, protect the rim, and run the floor makes him an ideal fit for the Los Angeles Lakers’ fast-paced style of play.
“The Lakers might need to do a little convincing to get Luka Doncic, who could enter free agency in 2026, to tie his future to theirs,” wrote Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley. “Those recruitment efforts should start in full swing this summer, as the team starts to construct a supporting cast tailored to his strengths.”

Mitchell Robinson’s skill set aligns perfectly with the Lakers’ needs. His catch radius and vertical leap make him an excellent target for Doncic and James in pick-and-roll situations. Defensively, his shot-blocking and rebounding would provide much-needed stability in the paint. However, his injury history remains a concern. Robinson hasn’t played this season, and his durability will be a key factor in any trade discussions.
To acquire Robinson, the Los Angeles Lakers might need to part with players like Gabe Vincent or Jarred Vanderbilt, whose $11 million salaries could help match Robinson’s $60 million contract. Adding a cheaper contract like Shake Milton’s could sweeten the deal for the Knicks.

While Mitchell Robinson’s health is a gamble, his potential impact on the Lakers’ championship aspirations is undeniable. If he can stay on the court, he could be the missing piece that elevates the Lakers from contenders to favorites. As the offseason approaches, all eyes will be on Rob Pelinka and the Lakers’ front office to see if they can pull off this blockbuster trade.
