Dallas Cowboys Face Tough Decision on DeMarcus Lawrence’s Future

Contract Talks Heating Up in Dallas
The Dallas Cowboys are already deep in contract negotiations with defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, with discussions involving superstar linebacker Micah Parsons likely to follow. However, another critical decision has emerged ahead of NFL free agency: the future of veteran defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.

Lawrence, whose contract is set to expire, has made his intentions clear—he wants to continue playing football. His agent, David Canter, confirmed on 105.3 The Fan that the veteran defensive lineman isn’t considering retirement. This contradicts earlier speculation sparked by Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones, who had suggested the team was waiting on Lawrence to decide his next move.

A Proven Leader, But Age and Injuries Loom
Lawrence remains one of the most well-rounded defensive ends in the league. He has long been a force against both the pass and the run, making him an invaluable asset to the Cowboys’ defensive front. However, re-signing him isn’t a simple decision.

Now 32, Lawrence will turn 33 before the 2025 season kicks off. While he’s still an elite run defender, his best years as a pass rusher may be behind him. Complicating matters further, he is coming off a Lisfranc foot injury that ended his 2024 season after just four games. This could significantly impact his value on the open market.

Despite these concerns, Lawrence is still projected to land a respectable two-year contract worth approximately $7.5 million per season, according to Pro Football Focus.

Cowboys’ Need for Edge Rushers
The Cowboys’ defensive line situation is in flux. As of now, Micah Parsons is the only proven edge rusher guaranteed to return in 2025. Chauncey Golston, like Lawrence, is also a pending free agent, while younger players like Sam Williams and Marshawn Kneeland have yet to prove they can be reliable starters at the NFL level.

Given this uncertainty, Dallas will almost certainly need to bolster their pass-rushing depth. Whether that means re-signing Lawrence, targeting a bargain edge rusher in free agency, or selecting a defensive end in the upcoming NFL Draft, expect the Cowboys to be active in addressing this position.

Will Lawrence Test Free Agency?
If Lawrence is looking for one final payday before retirement, he may be inclined to test free agency and gauge the market before committing to Dallas. If other teams show significant interest, a bidding war could drive up his price—potentially beyond what the Cowboys are willing to pay.

Dallas has a history of being “selectively aggressive” in free agency, which means they may hesitate to match offers if Lawrence’s value climbs too high. However, given the team’s current lack of proven pass rushers outside of Parsons, letting a veteran leader like Lawrence walk could create an even bigger hole to fill.

A Defining Decision for the Cowboys
With free agency approaching, the Cowboys must weigh their options carefully. Do they prioritize experience and leadership by re-signing Lawrence, even with his age and injury concerns? Or do they take a different approach, investing in younger, lower-cost alternatives to refresh their defensive line?

One thing is certain: Dallas cannot afford to ignore their edge-rushing situation. Whether Lawrence returns or not, this offseason will be pivotal in shaping the Cowboys’ defensive future.
