Jared Goff’s Job is Safe—For Now

There is no doubt that Goff is the Lions’ franchise quarterback, at least for the next several seasons. His current contract runs through 2027 or 2028, and he has played a key role in Detroit’s resurgence. However, the Lions appear to be thinking ahead, possibly preparing for a transition once Goff’s contract expires.

Where the uncertainty lies is with the backup position. The Lions currently have Hendon Hooker on the roster, but at 27 years old, his long-term viability as a future starter is questionable. By the time Goff’s contract is up, Hooker would be close to 30, making it difficult for the team to invest in him as their next franchise quarterback.

The Lions’ Backup Quarterback Dilemma

The team’s handling of the backup quarterback role has been a storyline throughout the past year. Throughout training camp and the preseason, the Lions consistently expressed doubts about Hooker’s readiness. During the playoffs, the Lions made Hooker inactive and instead relied on Bridgewater as the No. 2 quarterback. This decision underscored their hesitation about Hooker’s ability to step in if needed, making it clear that they are still searching for a more solid long-term solution.

Jalen Milroe: A Promising Developmental Quarterback

One of the most intriguing prospects the Lions have met with is Alabama’s Jalen Milroe. At just 22 years old, Milroe has experience playing in a pro-style system that is significantly more advanced than Tennessee’s offense, where Hooker played.

Milroe’s skill set is also appealing. He has mobility, the ability to escape pressure, and a playmaking ability that could make him a dangerous dual-threat option. If Detroit selects him, he would have the opportunity to develop under quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell, as well as other former NFL quarterbacks on staff, including Bruce Gradkowski and Marques Tuiasosopo. Learning behind Goff would also provide valuable experience as he prepares for a potential starting role in 2027 or 2028.

Where Could the Lions Draft Milroe?

Milroe is projected to be selected in the second or third round of the draft. The Lions hold the 60th overall pick, which could put them in position to grab him. However, if they decide to wait, they may have a chance to trade up in the early third round to secure him.

Along with Milroe, the Lions have also met with other quarterback prospects, including Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan. While Henigan is another intriguing option, Milroe’s skill set and youth make him a more appealing long-term investment for Detroit.
