The Miami Dolphins are heading into the offseason with a glaring need at offensive guard, and the spotlight has turned to Teven Jenkins as a potential solution. ESPN’s Aaron Schatz has predicted that the Dolphins might eye Jenkins, a promising former Chicago Bears guard, in free agency. Drafted in the second round in 2021, Jenkins’ career has had its ups and downs, but he certainly brings a lot to the table that could benefit Miami.

The Case For Jenkins’ Addition

First and foremost, Jenkins’ ability to dominate in the run game stands out. He’s known for his physicality, a trait that could inject much-needed aggression into Miami’s running attack.

After losing right tackle Austin Jackson to a season-ending injury last November, Miami’s run game lacked that grit at the line of scrimmage. Jenkins could fill that void, creating paths for running backs with authority.

In pass protection, Jenkins might not be the crème de la crème, but he holds his ground. His pass block win rate of 92 percent last season, deemed “average” by Schatz, is noteworthy, especially when considering the Bears led the league in sacks allowed. This statistic reflects his individual capability amidst a struggling unit, a positive sign for the Dolphins as they look to solidify their line.

Age is also on Jenkins’ side. At 27, he’s still in his prime and has demonstrated growth each year since entering the NFL.

Utilizing Jenkins as a guard, rather than a tackle — where his rookie struggles were pronounced — has allowed him to shine. Jenkins’ ability to switch between left and right guard adds versatility to his skill set, another asset that would be welcome in Miami.

The Durability Dilemma

However, the Dolphins must weigh his appealing attributes against his injury record. Jenkins has battled through various injuries during his four seasons, from a challenging rookie year with only six games played to more consistent yet still injury-interrupted seasons.

His injuries span from calf and hip issues to more severe concerns like neck and ankle ailments, as well as a concussion in 2023. This troubling pattern raises red flags, especially for a Dolphins team already plagued by injuries on the offensive line.

Considering Miami’s recent history with injury-prone free-agent guards, such as the saga with Isaiah Wynn, they’ve learned the hard way how critical durability is. Wynn, initially a promising addition, succumbed to injuries during the 2023 season, and the Dolphins’ gamble on his early return in 2024 did not pay off.

This context casts Jenkins’ injury history in a harsher light. For Miami, reliability and consistency on the line might outweigh potential when it comes to free agency decisions. While Jenkins checks many boxes, his susceptibility to injuries might be the Achilles’ heel the Dolphins can’t afford to risk.

In summation, Teven Jenkins presents an intriguing blend of talent and potential risk. His strengths as a robust run-blocker and improving guard offer solutions to some of the Dolphins’ pressing issues, but his injury history could severely impact his viability as a long-term answer. Miami’s next move will require careful consideration of how much they’re willing to gamble on potential versus the assurance of health and availability.
