Phillies’ latest round of roster cuts trims more top prospects from spring training…TS.DHUNG.

Philadelphia Phillies prospect Jean Cabrera

With the Philadelphia Phillies now two weeks into their spring training Grapefruit League schedule, the roster cuts are starting to pile up as they begin to trim their numbers with an eye toward finalizing the Opening Day 26-man roster. There’s still quite a way to go, but we got some more clarification of players who won’t be with the team on March 27 when the team announced their latest round of training camp cuts on Saturday morning.

Ahead of their home game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Phillies announced that right-handed pitching prospects Jean Cabrera and Moises Chace were optioned to Double-A Reading and right-hander Griff McGarry was reassigned to minor league camp.

Prior to today’s game, the Phillies made the following roster moves:

RHP’s Jean Cabrera and Moises Chace were optioned to Reading (AA) and RHP Griff McGarry was reassigned to minor league camp.

Phillies trim top prospects Moises Chace and Jean Cabrera in latest round of spring training roster cuts

Chace, 21, came over to the Phillies in the trade deadline deal that sent Gregory Soto to the Baltimore Orioles. The Phillies feel like they got a hidden gem in acquiring the right-hander, according to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. Chace moved up to No. 5 in the recent update of the Phillies’ Top 30 prospect rankings by MLB Pipeline. His last and only appearance in Grapefruit League action came on Friday. He threw a hitless inning in the Phillies’ 3-2 loss to the Pirates at LECOM Park, needing just 10 pitches to exit the seventh. Per Zolecki, Chace’s fastball topped out at 93.9 mph in the outing, although it’s usually in the mid-90s and topped out at 98 mph last year.

Cabrera, 23, appeared in two games for the Phillies this spring. He picked up a win, gave up one solo home run, struck out five and walked three in his three innings of work. His four-seam fastball sat at 93.5 mph in his last outing on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays, topping out at 94.5 mph, while his sinker maxed out at 94.2 mph. Cabrera had a breakout season in the minors last year, even being named the team’s breakout prospect by MLB Pipeline. He checks in as the No. 11 prospect in the system this spring.

Chace and Cabrera are both on the 40-man roster, while the other roster cut on Saturday, McGarry was a non-roster invitee this spring. His fall from grace continued this spring, as he dropped all the way to No. 30 in the system in MLB Pipeline’s rankings. He was the No. 3 Phillies prospect in 2023.

McGarry, 25, pitched in two games this spring, posting a 16.20 ERA and 3.60 WHIP in 1 2/3 innings. He gave up three runs (all earned) on four hits while striking out four and walking two. He spent most of last season, when healthy, in Triple-A Lehigh Valley, compiling a 4.70 ERA and 1.92 WHIP in 20 2/3 innings. He walked 36 (10.57 BB/9) while striking out 40 (11.74 K/9) in his 29 appearances for the IronPigs.

These three aren’t the first prospects to get cut this spring. The Phillies made their first round of training camp roster cuts on March 4, when they sent top prospects Aidan Miller (No. 2) and Justin Crawford (No. 3) down to minor league camp, in addition to three other players.
