Cowboys Predicted to Sign Their Own Kryptonite in Free Agency
Dallas Seeks Reinforcement in the Running Game
The Dallas Cowboys suffered from a lack of depth in the running back position during the 2024 season, a decision that proved costly. While Rico Dowdle stepped up with a breakout campaign, the team struggled to establish a consistent ground attack. Now, with Dowdle heading into free agency and likely commanding a price outside of Dallas’ range, the Cowboys must look for outside help.
The Need for a Veteran Presence
While drafting a rookie from the loaded 2025 class seems like a no-brainer, Dallas would also benefit from signing an experienced running back to stabilize the offense. According to Ian Valentino of The 33rd Team, one name that stands out is Aaron Jones, a familiar face who has tormented the Cowboys in the past.
Aaron Jones: A Logical Fit for Dallas?
Jones, who spent seven years with the Green Bay Packers before signing with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024, continues to be a productive back. Despite a slight decline in explosiveness—averaging 2.97 yards after contact per rush in 2024, his lowest since 2019—he still managed to average 4.5 yards per carry while also contributing as a receiver. Last season, he posted 1,138 rushing yards with five touchdowns, along with 408 receiving yards and two more scores on 51 receptions.
From Kryptonite to Key Player?
Dallas fans are all too familiar with the damage Jones has inflicted on their team. In the playoffs alone, he ran for 118 yards and three touchdowns in January 2024 as the Packers overwhelmed the Cowboys. Even in the regular season, he has averaged a staggering 123.3 yards and two touchdowns per game against Dallas.
If the Cowboys were to sign Jones, it would be an ironic twist—turning their biggest nightmare into one of their own weapons. More importantly, it could provide the boost their running game desperately needs heading into the 2025 season.
