Detroit Lions Secure Defensive Depth by Re-Signing Levi Onwuzurike
A Key Piece of Brad Holmes’ First Draft Class Returns
The Detroit Lions are ensuring continuity on their defensive line by bringing back defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike for the 2025 season. The former second-round pick has agreed to a one-year, $5.5 million contract, solidifying his place in Detroit’s evolving defense.
This move makes Onwuzurike the latest member of the Lions’ 2021 draft class to receive a second contract, joining key contributors like Penei Sewell, Alim McNeill, Derrick Barnes, and Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Overcoming Injuries and Showing Promise
Onwuzurike’s career in Detroit has been marked by resilience. After being selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Washington, he showed promise as a rookie, appearing in 16 games. However, a back injury forced him to miss the entire 2022 season, raising concerns about his long-term durability.
Upon his return in 2023, Onwuzurike played a rotational role in 10 games, gradually regaining form. His 2024 season was a breakthrough, as he started in 10 of his 16 appearances, recording 28 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. His ability to stay on the field and contribute consistently was a major step forward.
Strengthening a Defensive Line Facing Uncertainty
The Lions’ defensive front has lingering questions heading into 2025, making Onwuzurike’s return an important decision. The biggest concern is the health of Alim McNeill, who suffered a torn ACL in Week 15 against the Buffalo Bills. His availability for the start of the season remains uncertain.
Detroit has worked to reinforce the defensive line, recently signing nose tackle Roy Lopez to a one-year deal and re-signing restricted free agent Myles Adams. Meanwhile, veteran DJ Reader remains under contract for another season, bringing experience and stability to the unit.
A Smart Move in a Competitive Offseason
While the Lions managed to retain Onwuzurike, they also saw a departure from their 2021 draft class. Defensive back Ifeatu Melifonwu signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Miami Dolphins, marking the end of his tenure in Detroit.
For the Lions, bringing back Onwuzurike is a low-risk, high-reward move. If he continues to build on his 2024 performance, he could play a crucial role in the defensive line rotation. With depth concerns and McNeill’s injury situation, Onwuzurike’s return provides much-needed stability as Detroit aims to strengthen its defense for a playoff push.
