The Miami Dolphins kicked off the legal tampering period on Monday by re-signing a veteran defensive tackle. The team announced the return of Matt Dickerson, who is gearing up for his seventh NFL season.
In 2024, Dickerson saw limited action for the Dolphins, participating in just four games and logging a mere 16 snaps. Most of that season, he was part of Miami’s practice squad. Originally joining the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018, Dickerson started his career with the Tennessee Titans, where he notched 15 tackles and a postseason sack over three years.
After brief stints with several teams, he found himself with the Atlanta Falcons, appearing in six games and tallying 12 tackles. Departing from the Falcons in 2022, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2023 season. During his time with the Chiefs, he celebrated a Super Bowl victory and contributed 15 tackles along with a tackle for loss.
Although he remained with Kansas City through much of the 2024 offseason, he was released in early September. Subsequently, the Dolphins added him to their practice squad. In 2024, his role was primarily as a practice squad member, but he might secure a spot on the active roster in 2025, serving as a backup on the defensive line.
With Calais Campbell, Benito Jones, and Da’Shawn Hand all entering free agency, the Dolphins had been left with only one defensive lineman before re-signing Dickerson. While Dickerson’s new contract might not be substantial, his presence will be crucial for bolstering a position that currently lacks depth.
