Kansas City Chiefs Running Back Room Now A 3-Headed Monster - Athlon Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason has been defined by the offensive line and the reinforcement needed after the Super Bowl debacle, but the franchise also had a potential issue at the running back position.

Isiah Pacheco didn’t look like his usual self last season coming back from his injury and Kareem Hunt, who was a free agent, was the No. 1 back in the playoffs.

Enter former San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell.

Mitchell, if he can get over his injury problems as he sat out the entire 2024 season, he could become quite the weapon for Andy Reid.

Then came the news that Hunt was returning to the Chiefs on a one-year deal, and now Kansas City has three backs to rotate behind Patrick Mahomes and each offers something a little different to the offense.

Hunt, as we saw last year, is the tough, bruising runner who will wear down defenses as he pounds them into submission. Pacheco has the agility and quickness to turn a two or three-yard gain into a five or six-yard gain. Plus, like Hunt, he is a tough runner.

But then we get to Mitchell, and this is where Chiefs fans can get excited. They finally now have a back with blistering speed.

Yes, Mitchell is returning from a long layoff, but if he can be anything near what he was in his rookie season (963 yards, five touchdowns), then the Chiefs are in business.

Kansas City was so-so at running the football last season (101.2 yards per game, ranked 26th), and now, with three genuine starting backs, maybe the offense could be more run-centric in 2025.

Either way, three good options out of the backfield give Reid and Mahomes endless opportunities when dialing up plays.
