BREAKING: Boston Red Sox skipper Alex Cora discusses the heated race for the starting role at second base. nhathung

With just over a week until the 2025 MLB season begins, the Boston Red Sox are still undecided about who will fill the starting position at second base. According to an article by Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald, the team is still in the process of choosing their starting second baseman for Opening Day.

Boston Red Sox shortstop David Hamilton (17) bats during the second inning against the Detroit Tigers.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora has yet to make a decision on this front. The contenders for this role include Vaughn Grissom, David Hamilton, and Kristian Campbell, as identified by Cerullo. Throughout spring training, Hamilton has been the standout performer at bat, boasting a .270 average.

In comparison, Grissom has a .200 average, while Campbell is hitting .152. However, Cora seems unfazed by these spring training stats. “They’ve played well, whether it’s 0 for 20 or 10 for 20, it doesn’t factor into the decision,” he said. Cora did acknowledge Hamilton’s efforts, adding, “One thing for sure, (Hamilton) has played well, really well.”

Defense is also a critical consideration in this decision-making process, and all three players have shown competence in the field. Although Hamilton appears to be leading the race, his spot isn’t guaranteed. Cora will weigh a mixture of defensive skills, batting performance, and the side of the plate they bat from.

Cora expressed confidence in the second baseman position, stating, “I think certain factors will guide our roster decisions, but we feel comfortable.” The Red Sox will face the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, on March 27th for their season opener.
