Lions linebacker shades Colts after signing free-agent deal with Detroit image

Former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Grant Stuard didn’t hold back from throwing some major shade during his introductory press conference with the Detroit Lions.

Signing a one-year deal with Detroit after spending the last three seasons with the Colts, it was clear that Stuard had some strong feelings built up throughout his tenure in Indianapolis. Though he didn’t name the Colts specifically, it’s easy to see the connection he was making.

Ever since Dan Campbell took over as head coach of the Lions, the team has been synonymous with the type of culture that most organizations hope to build. From what Stuard said about that, it’s clear he felt the Colts have a lot of issues to work through.

“I got text messages from family members, from high school coaches and stuff saying like, ‘Hey, congrats on being part of a contender,’ and I think that’s the way it’s widely seen,” Stuard said. “There’s only about four or five teams you can say that about confidently and objectively, and I feel like this is definitely one of those places.”

While the Colts have hoped to find themselves in the contender category over the last few seasons, their four-year playoff drought suggests otherwise. They haven’t made it to the postseason since Philip Rivers was under center, and it’s the longest playoff drought since Jim Irsay took over everyday operations in the mid-1990s.

But that wasn’t the biggest part in which Stuard threw shade at his former team.

“[Detroit] is a place that I think is open to innovation, open to playing the guys who deserve to play, open to putting the best guys on the field and being very transparent about everything,” Stuard said. “It’s very hard to find a building full of authenticity from the head coach to the coordinators, and having a lot of former players (on Detroit’s staff), they seem to understand that as well.”

The Colts have constantly preached building a team culture the right way, but there have been a handful of accounts from former players that would suggest they’ve missed the mark.

Winning football games is one way of building a strong locker room, but Stuard provided some sharp words that are likely to find their way back to Indianapolis.
