Cowboys’ Backup Dilemma: Will a Familiar Face Return to Dallas, or Will a New Star Emerge?.D

Cowboys Could Reunite with Familiar Face in Search for Prescott Backup

The Search for a New Backup Begins

The Dallas Cowboys are in the market for a new backup quarterback following Cooper Rush’s departure to the Baltimore Ravens during NFL free agency. With Rush gone, Dak Prescott remains the only established signal-caller on the roster, with Will Grier currently serving as the lone backup.

Could Trey Lance Make a Return?

As Dallas explores its options, the team may look toward the 2025 NFL Draft for a young prospect. However, there is also speculation that the Cowboys could reunite with a familiar face: Trey Lance. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, bringing Lance back to the roster remains a real possibility.

“Their search for Dak Prescott’s backup could lead them back to Trey Lance with Cooper Rush gone, but they also have Will Grier on the roster,” Archer wrote. “They hope to add a quarterback in the draft, too.”

Evaluating Trey Lance’s First Season in Dallas

Lance started the Cowboys’ regular-season finale against the Washington Commanders in 2024. Though the performance was underwhelming, he managed to throw for 244 yards and rush for 26 more, showing glimpses of potential.

Despite not making a significant impact, Lance was originally acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a fourth-round pick. Given the investment Dallas has already made, the team may be inclined to give him another chance to prove his worth.

Will the Cowboys Give Lance Another Shot?

Trey Lance’s NFL career has yet to take off as expected for a former top-five draft pick, but quarterbacks with his pedigree often receive multiple opportunities. The Cowboys could be willing to see if he can develop further under their system.

With free agency still ongoing and the draft approaching, Dallas has multiple paths to address the quarterback depth chart. Whether it’s through the draft, a new signing, or a Lance reunion, one thing is clear—the Cowboys need to solidify their backup quarterback situation sooner rather than later.
