The Dallas Cowboys have been proactively addressing roster gaps at the start of the NFL free agency period, but still have some areas that need improvement through the NFL Draft or by acquiring free agents.
A significant remaining need is securing an affordable backup quarterback after Cooper Rush left to join the Baltimore Ravens. The New England Patriots’ second-year quarterback, Joe Milton III, has emerged as a potential candidate, now third on their depth chart following the signing of Joshua Dobbs.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler discussed on NFL Live that the Cowboys are a team to “keep an eye on” in the Milton trade discussions. “The Patriots are considering a trade. I’m informed that multiple teams have shown interest.
A team to potentially monitor is the Dallas Cowboys because they are seeking a competent backup, a young player with potential that might not be available in the draft, possibly obtainable through a trade,” Fowler mentioned on air, as reported by Bleacher Report.
Milton only played in one game last year as a rookie sixth-round selection, but he stunned the NFL by completing about 76 percent of his passes for 241 yards, along with both a passing and rushing touchdown. It remains to be seen whether the Cowboys will pursue Milton or address the backup quarterback issue in the draft, but as Fowler noted, they are a team to watch closely.
