Dak Prescott’s Search for a New Backup Quarterback

Cowboys in Need of a Reliable Backup

The Dallas Cowboys are on the hunt for a new backup quarterback following Cooper Rush’s departure to the Baltimore Ravens during the first week of NFL free agency. With Rush gone, the only quarterback on the roster besides Dak Prescott is Will Grier, leaving the team with a pressing need to fill the position.

While the NFL Draft presents several options, another intriguing possibility has emerged—a reunion with a familiar face.

Could Trey Lance Be the Answer?

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Cowboys might not be done with Trey Lance just yet. Lance, who started the 2024 regular-season finale against the Washington Commanders, remains an option for Dallas.

“Their search for Dak Prescott’s backup could lead them back to Trey Lance with Cooper Rush gone, but they also have Will Grier on the roster,” Archer noted. “They hope to add a quarterback in the draft, too.”

Lance’s lone start in Dallas saw him throw for 244 yards and rush for 26, but his performance was largely underwhelming. Despite this, the Cowboys previously invested a fourth-round pick to acquire him from the San Francisco 49ers, making a potential return a logical consideration.

A Second Chance for Lance?

While Lance has yet to establish himself as a reliable NFL quarterback, his status as a former top-five draft pick ensures that opportunities will continue to come his way. If the Cowboys are willing to give him another shot, it could be their way of maximizing their previous investment or at least securing a short-term solution at the position.

The question remains: Will Dallas place their trust in Lance once more, or will they turn to the draft for fresh talent? One thing is certain—Prescott needs a capable backup, and the Cowboys must act soon to solidify their quarterback depth.
