Every baseball fan knows that one player everyone adores, not for their stats, but for bringing their spark to the team. For the Philadelphia Phillies, that player has been Garrett Stubbs since he arrived in 2022.

Despite being the backup to J.T. Realmuto, Stubbs hasn’t made a big splash with his bat, yet his charm won over the fanbase.

This season, Stubbs finds himself starting in Triple-A as Rafael Marchán steps in as the backup catcher — a shift driven by several factors.

Stubbs’ move to Triple-A wasn’t a shocker. Marchán, without any minor league options left, has simply shown more promise as a catcher when given the chance.

The Phillies, needing to balance talent with team dynamics, made this strategic decision. For Stubbs, it’s business as usual, as he keeps readying himself for any opportunity.

“I knew this might happen with the options and all the business intricacies,” Stubbs acknowledged after his demotion. “But that doesn’t change my approach.”

During his initial year with the Phillies, Stubbs hit .264, showing glimpses of what he could offer with 10 extra-base hits, 16 RBIs, and a .812 OPS in just 106 at-bats. Yet, over two previous seasons, his stats dropped to a .206 average, proving he faced challenges at the plate.

But beyond numbers, Stubbs excelled in supporting pitchers and maintaining high spirits, even taking his role as clubhouse DJ seriously. While his personality is a big win, performance is ultimately what counts on the field.

Marchán has grown with the Phillies since signing in 2015, debuting in the majors in 2020. As a former top prospect, when healthy, he’s showcased why he was held in such high regard.

Injury woes have been his Achilles’ heel, but on the field, he has delivered a strong .279 career batting average at the major league level. When called upon during Realmuto’s injury in 2024, Marchán stepped up, hitting .294 with a .894 OPS in a platoon role with Stubbs.

Stubbs remains gracious despite the shift, recognizing Marchán’s abilities and expressing his hopes for the team’s success. “I felt good about my spring, but this is about Marchán getting his shot.

I want to see wins for the Phils,” he shared. In a roster full of calculations and tough decisions, Stubbs’ outlook exemplifies the spirit he brings to any clubhouse he joins.
