For the first time since Mike McDaniel took charge, the Miami Dolphins are coming off a season where they missed the playoffs. Despite having Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback with a $212 million contract, the Dolphins might need to start planning for the long term. This could involve trading star players while they still have significant trade value.
The most prominent name in this scenario for Miami is standout wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Mason Cameron from Pro Football Focus speculates that the Dolphins might find a potential trade partner in the Los Angeles Chargers. “Even though Hill posted a career-low PFF receiving grade of 77.3 in 2024, he remains one of the league’s most explosive talents.
Over the past three seasons, Hill has consistently ranked in the 92nd percentile for receiving grade and in the 99th percentile for yards per route run,” Cameron noted. “Teaming up with Ladd McConkey, this Chargers receiving lineup could become a formidable force with Herbert throwing the passes.” While it’s probable that Hill will stay with the Dolphins, it’s not impossible for Miami to consider parting with the 31-year-old, especially considering his contract.
The Dolphins can likely still acquire valuable assets in return for Hill, particularly if he’s traded to a team in contention like the Chargers. The main concern is his contract, which presents a $51.9 million salary-cap impact for the 2026 season, according to Spotrac.
This could significantly limit Miami’s ability to maneuver next offseason. Hill continues to be an effective receiver even following a less stellar 2024. His addition to the Chargers’ offense would provide Herbert with the deep threat he’s been missing, and it could offer the Dolphins more flexibility for future strategic moves.
