Heartbreaking story: Baby Adam Paulraj’s surgery delayed while family tries to raise more money

Surgery for Adam Paulraj, a child born in India with severe deformities, has been postponed since only about a third of the money needed for his new medical expenses has been raised.

Doctors had scheduled Adam for surgery the week of June 24. But since he isn’t covered by health insurance in the United States, his parents had to come up with the $150,000 to cover the cost of the surgery and other medical care he will need this summer.

About $50,000 has been raised.

Doctors plan to move Adam’s surgery to the middle or end of August, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, N.C. That is the next time the doctors who need to be with him during the surgery will be available.

Adam returned this week to Jacksonville, where his mother, Jessica Cooksey Paulraj, grew up and graduated from Stanton College Prep and where her family still lives. She and Raja Paulraj adopted Adam when they met him after he was born in a missionary hospital in India where they were working. They adopted him soon thereafter and immediately sought help for his medical needs.

Adam was born in September 2011 with Bartsocas-Papas, a rare syndrome that caused him to be born without eyelids and fingers. He had a cleft palate, cleft lip and his legs were fused.

During his first 10 surgeries, doctors worked on Adam’s eyelids and cleft lip, removed his legs below the knees and did some work on his gastrointestinal and urinary tracts.

This summer, doctors will repair his cleft palate and do some minor work in the area around his feeding tube, said John van Aalst, a plastic surgeon at the hospital. There isn’t a rush to do this summer’s surgery, van Aalst said, so the delay isn’t a problem. But van Aalst said it is important to do the cleft palate surgery as soon as possible so Adam can begin learning how to speak. People around the world helped raise about $200,000 to cover the cost of Adam’s first surgeries.

The Medical Foundation of North Carolina, which has been collecting the money for Adam’s medical bills, is reaching out to previous donors. And the family is trying to get word out to as many people as possible about Adam’s story and his medical needs. The online retailer shedoesjustice.com, which supports organizations in need, has selected to donate to Adam in July. At least 10 percent of the store’s gross profits will go toward Adam’s medical needs.

The Paulraj family has health insurance in India through the hospital where Raja works as a doctor. But that insurance doesn’t cover costs when the family is in the United States. Jessica has an insurance policy for her and her youngest son, Elliot. But Adam isn’t covered because he isn’t yet a United States citizen.

Paulraj said she can begin the process to make him a U.S. citizen in September, which is two years after he’s been with the Paulraj family. Once Adam has insurance, it should help.

While doctors say there isn’t a rush to perform the next surgery, Jessica said Adam can only legally remain in the United States until October.
