NEW YORK — The New York Yankees organization and local authorities have confirmed the identity of the fan who threw a lighter at shortstop Anthony Volpe, striking him in the head as he exited the field after Wednesday night’s game at Yankee Stadium.
The incident, which left Volpe visibly bleeding as he walked into the tunnel following the Yankees’ 5-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, sparked immediate outrage among teammates, fans, and the broader baseball community. Security footage and eyewitness accounts helped stadium officials quickly locate and detain the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Michael Trent, a Bronx resident and self-proclaimed lifelong Yankees supporter.
According to NYPD officials, Trent was sitting in the lower section near the third-base line when he hurled the object in a fit of frustration. “We were able to match video surveillance with ticketing records and social media posts made earlier that evening,” said Detective Laura Kim, who is leading the investigation.
Anthony Volpe, 23, was examined by team medical staff and received stitches for a laceration above his left eyebrow. He is expected to return to play pending further medical evaluation. “It was a scary moment, but I’m okay,” Volpe said in a brief statement. “I appreciate all the messages of support and hope this never happens to another player.”
Yankees management condemned the act in the strongest terms and issued a lifetime ban against Trent. “There is absolutely no place for violence or aggression in baseball or any sporting event,” said Yankees GM Brian Cashman. “Our players’ safety is paramount.”
The MLB is reportedly also reviewing the incident and considering further security mandates for ballparks around the league.
Trent faces charges of assault, reckless endangerment, and disorderly conduct. His arraignment is scheduled for later this week.
