Detroit Lions Prepare for Divisional Round Amid Coaching Speculation
The Detroit Lions are coming off their playoff bye week and are set to face the Washington Commanders on Saturday, January 18, in the Divisional Round. As the NFC’s top seed, the Lions have secured home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, capping off an impressive season. However, even with their current success, some NFL analysts are looking ahead to the team’s future and the potential challenges it may face after this season.
As head coaching vacancies around the league heat up, both Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn have emerged as top candidates for other teams. NFL insider Adam Schefter recently shared his perspective on their futures during a special appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, January 14.
While discussing the New York Jets’ head coaching search, Schefter mentioned Glenn as a serious contender. He also predicted that the Lions might lose both of their coordinators this offseason.
As the Lions focus on their playoff run, head coach Dan Campbell addressed questions about Glenn and Johnson’s potential departures. During a press conference on Monday, January 13, Campbell was asked whether he had discussed their head coaching interviews with them.
“Well, why would I want to know that? You think I want them to leave?” Campbell replied with a smile, noting that he hasn’t directly asked them about their plans.
Campbell did acknowledge he plans to touch base with his coordinators. “I’ve got an idea of how they’re doing. I have not run in there and asked if they’re leaving yet. I didn’t do that. At some point today, I’ll talk to them about what transpired.”
With Glenn and Johnson playing key roles in the Lions’ 15-2 record this season, their potential departures could significantly impact the team. However, the Lions remain focused on their immediate goal: making it to the Super Bowl.
