Volvo’s Largest Excavator Moving from Conexpo 2020

This impressive machine weighs in at a whopping 213,848 pounds and boasts a bucket capacity of up to 9.5 cubic yards.

The answer: with careful planning and specialized equipment.

Volvo’s team of experts worked closely with logistics professionals to coordinate the move of the EC950E from the Conexpo site in Las Vegas to its new home. The first step was to disassemble the excavator into its main components, including the cab, counterweight, boom, and tracks. Each component was then loaded onto a separate flatbed truck for transport.

The cab, which weighs approximately 40,000 pounds, was loaded onto a trailer designed to handle oversized cargo. The trailer was equipped with hydraulic lifts that could raise the cab to the necessary height for clearance on highways and bridges.

The counterweight, which weighs around 90,000 pounds, was loaded onto a 16-axle trailer designed to handle heavy loads. This trailer was capable of carrying up to 160,000 pounds of weight.

The boom and tracks were loaded onto separate flatbed trucks for transport. The tracks were secured to the flatbeds using specialized clamps to prevent movement during transit.

The entire move required multiple oversized permits and coordination with law enforcement to ensure safe and efficient transport. The journey was completed without incident, and the EC950E arrived at its new destination ready for use.
