On April 13, Brooks Baldwin delivered a walk-off RBI single, and Luis Robert Jr. hit a two-run homer, propelling the Chicago White Sox to a 3-2 triumph over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Saturday. This marked Chicago’s first series win of the season and their first back-to-back victories.
Boston has now dropped five of their last six games. Robert Jr. drew a walk from Aroldis Chapman (2-1) to lead off the ninth inning, then stole second base after Andrew Vaughn struck out, setting the stage for Baldwin’s heroics. Tyler Gilbert (1-0) earned the win in relief, retiring the final batter in Boston’s ninth inning.
The Red Sox scored twice in the fifth inning, with Ceddanne Rafaela hitting an RBI triple to left-center after Carlos Narvaez’s leadoff single. Rafaela then scored on Romy Gonzalez’s RBI single. Chicago’s left-handed pitcher, Martin Perez, gave up two runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings, with four walks and five strikeouts. Prior to Saturday, Perez had allowed just one run and walked five in two starts spanning 12 1/3 innings.
Boston’s rookie right-hander, Matt Fitts, retired the first four Chicago batters he faced before issuing a walk to Joshua Palacios and conceding a hit to Chase Meidroth, which put two runners on with one out in the second. Fitts escaped the jam with a strikeout and a flyout, initiating a streak of retiring 10 consecutive White Sox batters. Fitts allowed just two hits, one walk, and recorded five strikeouts over five-plus innings without allowing a run.
His outing was cut short when he exited due to “right shoulder pain” in the sixth inning, after showing discomfort on a pitch to Chicago’s Miguel Vargas. Manager Alex Cora and a Red Sox trainer removed him from the game. Reliever Zack Kelly subsequently walked Vargas and struck out Nick Maton before Robert launched his first homer of the season, a two-run shot to right-center. Both Trevor Story and Rafaela collected two hits each for the Red Sox.
