TAMPA — Red Sox catcher Connor Wong, sidelined indefinitely due to a fractured pinky, engaged in some baseball activities on Tuesday, eight days post-injury. “He’s making progress and feeling better. In fact, he managed some catching drills today, which is encouraging,” manager Alex Cora mentioned prior to Boston’s matchup with the Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The Red Sox’s catching depth further dwindled on Tuesday as Triple-A Worcester placed Seby Zavala on the 7-day IL with a left oblique strain. Currently, Boston relies on Carlos Narváez and Blake Sabol as their major league catching pair. Together, they have only 68 career starts as catchers in the majors. Boston recently signed experienced catcher Yasmani Grandal to a minor league contract on Thursday, assigning him to Worcester.
~ Masataka Yoshida, who started the season on the IL following a right shoulder labral repair in the offseason, is in rehabilitation at Fort Myers. When asked about Yoshida’s readiness for a rehab assignment, Cora replied, “No, not yet.”
Yoshida managed to bat during spring training, achieving a 10-for-35 (.286) record. However, he is still progressing with his throwing and will not return until he can throw from the outfield.
~ Kutter Crawford, dealing with right patellar tendinopathy, threw another bullpen session on Saturday. “I’m not sure about the next step,” Cora stated. “But he’s definitely not close to rejoining us.”
~ Lucas Giolito, recovering from a left hamstring strain, is set to make a rehab start for Double-A Portland tonight.
