Yoshida has been absent since spring training and will likely head back to Boston for further treatment on his shoulder. “The throwing aspect didn’t go well this week,” manager Alex Cora mentioned to reporters before Tuesday’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays.
“This week hasn’t been ideal.” Yoshida played in 11 games for the Red Sox during spring training, achieving a .286 batting average. However, he began experiencing discomfort from his shoulder surgery and has been out of action since.
The Red Sox are eager to have Yoshida back in the lineup soon. Triston Casas continues to struggle and hasn’t shown improvement in his performance. If Yoshida could return as a designated hitter, his shoulder issue wouldn’t be much of a worry.
However, the DH role is currently occupied by Rafael Devers, with Alex Bregman covering third base, indicating that Yoshida will frequently be used as an outfielder. Cora previously informed reporters that Yoshida is far from ready for a rehab assignment, which greatly diminishes the chances of him playing in the first half of the season.
With the American League East division being closely contested at the top and the Red Sox just one game behind first place after Wednesday’s games, Boston can’t afford to wait much longer for Yoshida’s return before considering external options.
