On May 3, Triston Casas, the first baseman for the Boston Red Sox, was carried off the field on a stretcher after sustaining a serious injury to his left knee during Friday night’s matchup against the Minnesota Twins.
The incident occurred in the bottom of the second inning when Casas hustled to first base after a check-swing grounder was mishandled by Twins pitcher Joe Ryan. As Casas stepped firmly onto the first base bag, his left foot collided with the foot of Minnesota’s first baseman Ty France, resulting in a hard fall onto his knee.
He remained on the ground until medical staff attended to him. Following Boston’s 6-1 win, manager Alex Cora reported that Casas was undergoing evaluation. “It’s a significant knee injury,” Cora stated. “He’s currently at the hospital for further tests.
We expect to know more tomorrow.” Cora also noted that Casas seemed to be in a state of shock during treatment. “He mentioned he couldn’t feel it initially. It’s tough to see, especially since he puts in so much effort, and we want him out there. That was a hustle play, and unfortunately, this happened.” Romy Gonzalez took over at first base for Casas.
At 25, Casas is hitting .182 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 29 games this season. Last year, he faced adversity as well, being restricted to 63 games due to a left rib cage injury, during which he hit .241 with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs.
