BOSTON (AP) — In a game against the Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox first baseman Romy Gonzalez exited the field after a collision with Texas first baseman Josh Smith while attempting to reach first base with an infield hit on Wednesday night.
Both athletes were on the ground for some time, receiving attention from their respective trainers. Gonzalez laid near the right-field line, and Smith was beside the base. “Just sore,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora following their 6-4 win. “The way he fell tightened his back. I think he’s day to day. He should be all right.”
Smith stepped back slightly to field a throw from third base and ran into Gonzalez’s left leg as he reached the base, causing the Boston player to fall. Initially, Gonzalez was called safe on a play that brought in a run, moving the Red Sox to a 4-3 lead. However, after the Rangers challenged the decision, the run was nullified, and the inning concluded.
Boston’s first base position is currently undermanned after Triston Casas suffered a season-ending tendon rupture in his left knee last week while running to first. Gonzalez is anticipated to take the primary role at that position. On Wednesday, Gonzalez was replaced by Abraham Toro, who was promoted from Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
The team’s management is hesitant to consider shifting Rafael Devers to first base after transitioning him from third to designated hitter upon signing free agent Alex Bregman to a $120-million contract for three years during spring training. “As I mentioned to you all in spring training, he’s my designated hitter,” Cora stated on Saturday regarding Devers.
