Red Sox executives traveled to Kansas City on Friday to address the Rafael Devers situation. Owner John Henry, team president Sam Kennedy, and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow joined the team during an escalating dispute between the star third baseman and the front office, according to several reports.
Earlier this week, Devers, who reluctantly transitioned from third base to designated hitter after the Alex Bregman acquisition, expressed his unwillingness to switch to first base following Triston Casas’s season-ending injury. “I understand I’m a player, but they can’t expect me to cover every position,” Devers stated through a translator, as reported by the Boston Globe.
“During spring training, they informed me to set aside my glove, indicating I’d only be a DH. So, I currently feel it’s inappropriate for them to request I switch positions.” Devers seems to be at odds with Breslow, specifically, after expressing uncertainty about any issues he might have with him when speaking to reporters earlier this week.
“I’m unsure what his problem with me might be,” Devers said. “He played the game, so I’d expect he knows how difficult such a position change can be.” Breslow conveyed to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo that Henry and Red Sox manager Alex Cora held a private discussion with Devers on Friday.
“Given yesterday’s developments, we believed it crucial to come here and have a candid discussion about our organizational values and what we deem important to the Boston Red Sox,” Breslow remarked. “That includes being excellent teammates for one another.”
