49ers Eyeing Josh Simmons as Potential Successor to Trent Williams in 2025 NFL Draft

San Francisco’s Search for a Future Left Tackle

As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, the San Francisco 49ers are on the hunt for a dominant left tackle who can eventually take over for veteran Trent Williams. With Williams nearing the twilight of his career and struggling with injuries, the franchise is expected to prioritize strengthening its offensive line.

ESPN’s Projection: Josh Simmons to the 49ers?

In his latest mock draft column, ESPN’s Field Yates has projected that the 49ers might select Ohio State offensive tackle Josh Simmons with the No. 11 overall pick. Yates emphasized that Williams’ age and recent injury history make it imperative for San Francisco to invest in a long-term replacement.

“Trent Williams will be 37 years old in July and sat out seven games in 2024,” Yates wrote. “If San Francisco wants to return to form and keep its contention window open, it must invest in the offensive line this offseason. Simmons is coming off a knee injury sustained in October, so his range is much wider than most prospects slotted this high — medicals will be key for him. But if they check out throughout the process, Simmons’ elite physical traits and quickness give him a chance to emerge as the best left tackle in the class.”

Trent Williams: A Hall of Fame Career Nearing Its End

Trent Williams, a future Hall of Famer, remains one of the best left tackles in the game, but he turns 37 in July and played only 10 games in 2024 due to an ankle injury. Although still committed to the team and under contract through 2026, Williams has never played a full 17-game season since joining the 49ers in 2020. Given this, the front office understands the urgency of finding a capable successor.

Josh Simmons’ Strengths and Injury Concerns

Josh Simmons, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound tackle, transferred from San Diego State to Ohio State and quickly became one of the Buckeyes’ best pass protectors. Before suffering a knee injury on October 12, Simmons allowed just one quarterback pressure across 306 snaps and earned an impressive 82.0 pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus. His overall season grade was a career-high 74.4.

Despite his talent, Simmons’ draft stock has been affected by the knee injury. However, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed in December that he is expected to be fully cleared for training camp. If his medical evaluations are positive, Simmons’ elite athleticism and quickness could solidify his status as the best left tackle prospect in the draft.

49ers Facing a Crucial Decision at No. 11

San Francisco finished the 2024 season with a disappointing 6-11 record, missing the playoffs and exposing several key roster deficiencies. The team has pressing needs on both the offensive and defensive lines, making the No. 11 pick a pivotal selection. Historically, the 49ers have favored drafting defensive linemen early, but the urgency to secure Williams’ replacement may force a shift in strategy.

The last time the 49ers used a top-15 pick on an offensive lineman was in 2018, when they selected Mike McGlinchey at No. 9. With limited opportunities to draft elite tackles in future years, choosing Simmons now could be a long-term investment in the franchise’s stability.

A Smooth Transition with Williams as a Mentor?

If drafted, Simmons would have the invaluable opportunity to learn from Williams, facilitating a smooth transition when the veteran eventually retires. Additionally, Simmons’ versatility could provide an immediate boost to the offensive line. Before his time at Ohio State, he played right tackle at San Diego State, meaning he could potentially upgrade the team’s current right tackle situation with Colton McKivitz.

Will Simmons Be the 49ers’ Future Anchor?

While durability concerns remain a factor in the 49ers’ decision-making process, Simmons’ potential as a franchise left tackle makes him a logical target in the 2025 NFL Draft. With an aging star at the position and a critical need to solidify the offensive line, selecting Simmons could be the move that ensures San Francisco’s continued success for years to come.
