3 Veteran Stars the Lions Should Add to Their Practice Squad for a Playoff Edge – Including a Future Hall of Famer Chasing Super Bowl Glory.D

The Detroit Lions are gearing up for the playoffs, and while we don’t yet know their exact seeding, one thing is certain – they’re in. As the team prepares for their postseason run, they still have two available spots on their practice squad. This presents an excellent opportunity to bring in some veteran players who can provide extra help down the stretch and potentially be elevated to the active roster for key playoff games.

The Lions are struggling with sacks, but something Dan Campbell hyped up in May is really working out ahead of the playoffs

With the playoffs fast approaching, it’s time to look at which experienced players are available to join the Lions. Here are three veterans who could be game-changers for Detroit as they look to strengthen their depth and bring in some fresh talent for their postseason push:

1. Edge Takk McKinley

It’s surprising to see former first-round pick Takk McKinley still on the market. The 29-year-old defensive end spent most of the 2023 season with the New York Jets, and although his opportunities were limited, he still managed to generate pressure and even register a sack. McKinley has the skill set and experience to be a solid contributor to a playoff-bound team, and with the Lions seeking depth along the defensive line, adding McKinley to the practice squad could give them the pass-rush boost they need. With the playoffs around the corner, McKinley could be just the type of veteran presence that could make a difference when it matters most.

2. Cornerback Patrick Peterson

Patrick Peterson may be one of the most intriguing free-agent veterans still waiting for his next opportunity. After the Pittsburgh Steelers released him last March, Peterson has kept the door open for a return to the NFL and is eager to make one final Super Bowl push. A future Hall of Famer, Peterson is widely recognized for his elite cornerback play and leadership on the field. While it might be a long shot for the Lions to sign Peterson, adding him to their practice squad could provide much-needed cornerback depth, especially after losing top cornerback Emmanuel Moseley this season. Peterson still has plenty to offer and could prove to be an invaluable asset, not only as a player but also as a mentor for Detroit’s young defensive backs. The Lions could give him the chance he’s been hoping for – one last shot at a Super Bowl.

3. Defensive Tackle Hassan Ridgeway

Hassan Ridgeway is another veteran who could prove to be a surprise contributor for the Lions, much like Tyson Alualu was for them last year. After suffering a torn Achilles in November of the previous season, Ridgeway has been working his way back to full health and is now ready to make an impact. A strong presence in the middle of the defensive line, Ridgeway could add much-needed depth to the Lions’ front seven. The team could use another big body in the middle to help against the run, and Ridgeway has the potential to provide solid play after being somewhat of an under-the-radar talent in previous seasons. He’s familiar with the league and could be a valuable asset to a team that is looking to add experienced depth along the defensive front.

As the Lions prepare for their playoff run, these three veterans could be exactly what the team needs to take the next step. While the addition of these players might not seem like a massive move, the value of adding seasoned professionals with proven track records cannot be underestimated, especially when it comes to making a deep playoff push. These veteran players could provide the extra edge, experience, and leadership that the Lions need as they aim for postseason glory. Keep an eye on these potential signings, as they may just be the pieces Detroit needs to complete their playoff puzzle.
