4 Eagles Newly Eligible for Contract Extensions on Monday-HN

Philadelphia Eagles fans and players have their attention firmly set on Sunday’s matchup with the Green Bay Packers. The front office will too, but they’ll also need to have one eye looking ahead to the offseason. More than half of the NFL has already kicked off their offseasons, and playoff teams need to make sure they don’t fall behind.

One interesting wrinkle that doesn’t wait for the end of the postseason is the progression of players eligible for contract extensions. On Monday of Wild Card week, all players still on rookie contracts from the 2022 NFL Draft are now eligible to sign contract extensions.

That draft was a big one for the Eagles, and that means some key players could be getting new deals.

The Philadelphia Eagles made five selections in the 2022 NFL Draft, and four of them are still on the roster on rookie deals: Jordan Davis, Cam Jurgens, Nakobe Dean and Grant Calcaterra. All four of them are now eligible for contract extensions for the first time.

For Jurgens, Dean and Calcaterra, who didn’t have fifth-year options on their rookie deals like Davis did, that means they’re entering the final season of their deals. Calcaterra isn’t exactly a crucial piece of this team, but it means that extending Jurgens and Dean must be near the top of GM Howie Roseman’s priority list this offseason.

Jurgens has made the Pro Bowl in his first season as the starting center, replacing franchise legend Jason Kelce, and Dean has finally had the breakout year fans have been hoping for. He’s played a big role in helping transform this defense after a disappointing 2023-24 season.

Over the Cap projects Philly to have only about $23.6 million in cap room this offseason (No. 20 in the NFL), but that should still be enough to get their key extensions done, especially since stars like AJ Brown, Devonta Smith, Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley are all locked up.

And of course, for now, fans are going to remain a lot more worried about the Green Bay Packers than they are about contract negotiations.
