The San Francisco 49ers have their work cut out for themselves during the offseason. They failed to make the playoffs and had to watch as their NFC foe Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59.

With the Super Bowl finally in the rearview mirror, the 49ers offseason is about to kick into overdrive. There will be a flurry of moves made along the roster and one is very clear.

The 49ers should part ways with defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. Back in March 2023, San Francisco signed Hargrave to a four-year, $84 million deal. He was coming off a career-year with the Philadelphia Eagles, logging 60 total tackles and 11 sacks.

Since landing in San Francisco, Hargrave has been a good player but is coming off a major injury. This past season, he partially tore his right triceps, ending his season. Prior to going down, Hargrave had a 60.6 overall grade and measly 44.7 run-defense per PFF.

The 49ers have an out of Hargrave’s contract this offseason but would get hit with a $24 million dead cap hit. According to Spotrac.com, San Francisco has $50 million in cap space but that number could increase with trades and contract restructures.

The 49ers need more production along the interior and could look elsewhere to find that answer. They could tap into the Philadelphia well again this offseason and add defensive tackle Milton Williams.

He is going to hit free agency after spending four seasons in Philadelphia. Williams has played in at least 16 games in all four campaigns, compiling 132 total tackles, 11.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles for the Eagles.

In the biggest game of his career in Super Bowl 59 against the Chiefs, he had four total tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble. Per Spotrac, Williams’ projected market value is a three-year, $36 million deal.

If the 49ers can replace Hargrave with Williams, that would be a home run but regardless, it’s time to part ways with the 32-year-old.
