The San Francisco 49ers have been busy over the last two weeks as they continue building their roster for the 2025 season. Last week, the 49ers traded veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders for a 2025 fifth-round pick.
Then, on Thursday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the San Francisco 49ers informed veteran defensive tackle Javon Hargrave that he will be released on the first day of the new league year next week.
49ers fans were not shocked to see the team parting ways with the 32-year-old Hargrave, as ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported last week that Hargrave would be a post-June 1 release by San Francisco.
However, the latest reports out of the Bay Area suggest that a potential reunion could still be on the table. According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, 49ers general manager John Lynch said the team would look into re-signing Hargrave in free agency.
Hargrave wrapped up his second season with the 49ers after signing a massive four-year, $84 million deal in Mar. 2023. After a strong performance in 2023, the veteran defender only played three games due to a season-ending triceps injury.
Without Hargrave in the middle of the 49ers’ defensive line, they lost a player who had seven sacks in 2023 and was effective at stopping the run. This past season, San Francisco allowed 124.6 rushing yards per game (18th in the NFL) and 24 rushing TDs (tied for second-most with the Carolina Panthers).
The 49ers are set to have $34.3 million in free agency, which gives them enough room to bring in new players and re-sign a guy like Hargrave. The veteran defensive tackle is reportedly healthy too, which is something to remember. Nonetheless, we’ll see if the two sides can link back up over the next few weeks.
