49ers blockbuster trade idea lands $7 million, 900-yard playmaker from Steelers image

So far, this offseason has been all about the players leaving the San Francisco 49ers. Do they still have time to turn the narrative around?

Since late February, the 49ers have lost stars such as Deebo Samuel, Charvarius Ward, Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga, and Aaron Banks. But there’s still enough talent left behind for a playoff contender if enough things break right.

With Samuel gone, though, there’s uncertainty for the 49ers at the wide receiver position. Brandon Aiyuk, seven months after signing a $120 million extension, will likely miss a chunk of the regular season, while the other returners have fairly low ceilings.

Could the 49ers eliminate all that uncertainty with a blockbuster trade?

On Wednesday, CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo named the 49ers among possible trade fits for Pittsburgh Steelers wideout George Pickens, who has been the subject of trade buzz since his team acquired D.K. Metcalf earlier this month.

“San Francisco would make sense on several fronts. With Pickens in tow, the 49ers would have flexibility when it comes to Brandon Aiyuk, the formerly disgruntled wideout who suffered a season-ending injury last year following a lengthy and nasty holdout,” DeArdo wrote.

“Pittsburgh wouldn’t want to take on (Aiyuk’s) salary. This trade would likely be about the Steelers acquiring a high draft pick unless the 49ers would be willing to deal Jauan Jennings… who set career highs last year with 77 receptions for 975 yards and six touchdowns.”

Pickens, 24, had 900 receiving yards in just 14 games this past season, despite juggling starting quarterbacks for a third-straight year. He’s entering the final year of his $7 million rookie contract, so if there was ever a time the Steelers would consider trading him, it would be now.

With that said, the Steelers may well be better off riding things out with both Pickens and Metcalf, giving themselves a shot at finally having a dynamic passing game. The 49ers should be inquisitive, but not count on Pittsburgh making him available.
