49ers use Jordan Mason to acquire more picks in the 2025 NFL Draft-baro

A few days after placing a second-round tender on him, the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly decided to trade running back Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings.

According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport on Saturday, the 49ers sent Mason and a 2025 sixth-round pick (187th overall) to the Vikings in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round selection (160th overall) and a 2026 sixth-round pick.

49ers RB Coach Explains How Jordan Mason has Grown Up

With this weekend’s deal, San Francisco now has a total of 11 selections in this year’s NFL Draft, and adding a new face to the team’s backfield might have just become a bigger priority.

Pressure increases on Christian McCaffrey to remain healthy after San Francsco 49ers trade Jordan Mason to Minnesota Vikings

Following Saturday’s reported trade, Christian McCaffrey, Issac Guerendo, Israel Abanikanda, and Patrick Taylor are the running backs who are currently under contract with the 49ers.

With Mason’s departure, one would assume that Guerendo will likely see an increase in his snaps with San Francisco next season. Whether or not he can fill in as the 49ers’ No. 1 running back if McCaffrey has to miss any time in 2025 remains to be seen, but it seems like the team at least thinks this is possible based on the trade they made this weekend.

Mason’s tenure with San Francisco comes to an end after spending the last three years with the franchise. He arrived in 2022 as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech, and during his three seasons with the 49ers, he rushed for a total of 1,253 yards and seven touchdowns, in addition to catching 14 passes for 122 yards.
