Texas A&M Quarterback Joins Detroit Lions
A former Texas A&M Aggies quarterback is heading to the Motor City, joining head coach Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions for the 2025 NFL season.
Kyle Allen Signs with Detroit
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Lions have agreed to terms with quarterback Kyle Allen. The veteran signal-caller spent last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, appearing in just one game. Now, he will serve as the backup to Jared Goff on a team led by Dan Campbell—another former Aggie who played tight end at Texas A&M.
College Career at Texas A&M
Allen played two seasons at Texas A&M before transferring to Houston for his final year of college football. During his time as an Aggie, he appeared in 21 games, completing 278 of 475 passes for 3,532 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Though he went undrafted in 2018, he has since carved out a respectable career in the NFL.
A Well-Traveled NFL Veteran
Despite being an undrafted free agent, Allen has managed to stick around in the league, spending time with multiple teams, including the Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders, Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, and Pittsburgh Steelers. He holds a 7-12 record as a starter, with 4,753 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions to his name.
A Wild Texas A&M Story
Allen’s time at Texas A&M was not without its memorable moments. Former Aggies defensive tackle Daylon Mack recently shared a humorous—and chaotic—story about Allen and Kyler Murray from a 41-23 loss to Alabama in 2015.
“So the Alabama game, Kyle Allen throws three pick-sixes, which is like some (expletive) you can’t even do on Madden,” Mack recalled on the AgKnocks podcast, per On3. “That’s so insane because we lost the game by like a touchdown, 10 points, or something like that. We could’ve won that game.”
Mack continued, detailing the bizarre quarterback rotation:
“(Allen) throws two pick-sixes and they put Kyler in. So Kyler gets in the game, and then Kyler throws a pick. They take Kyler out of the game and put Kyle back in. Kyle throws another pick-six. They go back to Kyler. Kyler tells Spav, ‘(bleep) you, I don’t want to play for you.’”
What’s Next for Allen in Detroit?
While Allen is unlikely to see significant playing time behind Goff, he brings experience and depth to a Lions team with playoff aspirations. His journey through the league has been full of ups and downs, but his resilience has kept him in the NFL. Now, he’ll have a chance to contribute to one of the league’s most exciting up-and-coming teams.
