On the same day that running back Raheem Mostert secured a contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, the Miami Dolphins identified his likely successor.
Although Mostert was let go by the Dolphins roughly a month prior, Miami is said to have reached a one-year agreement with former Raiders running back Alexander Mattison. The financial details of this deal have yet to be disclosed.
Originally selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, Mattison enjoyed a productive five-year career in Minnesota, serving mainly as a backup to Dalvin Cook for four seasons. However, his stint as the starting back in 2023 was less successful.
Mattison then signed a one-year contract with the Raiders to vie for the starting position alongside Zamir White, but it resulted in a career-low 420 rushing yards and an average of 3.2 yards per carry. Even with Mostert’s departure, the Dolphins are expected to heavily depend on third-year player De’Von Achane, both in the running and receiving game.
Jaylen Wright is entering his second year, and given their dynamic abilities, it’s anticipated that the Dolphins will focus on this duo. Moreover, the Dolphins might consider using one of their 11 draft picks—eight of which are scheduled for Day 3—on a running back in the 2025 NFL Draft.
This draft class is touted as one of the deepest since the 2017 cohort, which still features numerous starters in the league.
