The Detroit Lions provided mixed updates on two players on injured reserve: Ifeatu Melifonwu and John Cominsky.

Lions coach Dan Campbell addressed the status of two players yet to play this season. Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, sidelined all year with groin and finger injuries, began his 21-day practice window on Wednesday, making him eligible to return from injured reserve.

The outlook is less promising for defensive end John Cominsky, who tore his MCL in July. Although the Lions initially hoped for a late-season return, Campbell indicated Wednesday that Cominsky’s return this season is unlikely.

“I think it’s unlikely,” Campbell said. “He’s been trying hard, rehabbing, doing everything he can. But getting over that last hurdle has been tough. Everyone’s working hard, but it’s just not happening.”

Cominsky, a key depth player since joining the Lions off waivers in 2022, tallied 4.0 sacks, 12 QB hits, and three passes defended in 14 games that year. Last season, he started 11 games, recording 2.0 sacks, 36 tackles, and eight QB hits.

His absence impacts the Lions’ defensive line as they push for the playoffs, especially with Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, and Derrick Barnes unlikely to return. Hutchinson has a slim chance of appearing in the Super Bowl.

Melifonwu’s potential return comes as the Lions adjust to losing cornerback Carlton Davis, who broke his jaw on Sunday and is out indefinitely. While Melifonwu is unlikely to fill Davis’s role as an outside cornerback, he could contribute in various positions, including nickel corner, linebacker, or safety.

However, since Melifonwu has barely practiced this season, it’s uncertain when he will rejoin the lineup. Campbell didn’t rule out Melifonwu playing against the Chicago Bears this week.

“Could he help us on Sunday? I’m not sure yet,” Campbell said. “We’ll see how he looks running around out there.”
