The San Francisco 49ers traded Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders on Saturday night. Could the move be an indication of more moves to come?

The 49ers have Brock Purdy’s extension looming, and the Samuel trade gives them a little more financial flexibility. However, the 49ers could trade another superstar receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, to both help the salary cap situation and get younger. General manager John Lynch spoke on trade rumors centered around Aiyuk and noted that it could help the team get younger.

“You get calls and you always listen to calls,” Lynch responded to a question about Aiyuk. “I think since Kyle and I have been here, we’ve been certainly a top five, I believe, number two, cash spending team in the four years. Going into the fourth year, I think we’re the fourth highest cash spending team, so at some point you have to reset a little bit or at least recalibrate. You can’t just keep pressing the pedal and I think there’s some good that could come out. We need to get younger, I think we’re the oldest team in football trying to make a run at the deal last year. And I think it’s good to constantly get younger.”

Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million deal last offseason. Trading him would help the 49ers cap situation, while also adding draft capital to help them get younger like Lynch wants. TWSN’s Marissa Myers predicted the 49ers would trade Aiyuk to the Chicago Bears.

“With the Bears, they are entering their first season under new head coach, Ben Johnson,” wrote Myers. “They also are going to monitor the growth of Caleb Williams as he enters his second season. Johnson is an offensive-minded head coach, and with Keenan Allen set to hit free agency, DJ Moore being underwhelming, and Rome Odunze needing to show growth in year two, Johnson will be looking for playmakers to help his scheme function. Williams’ development is crucial for Chicago, and how the Bears can ensure he stays on the right track is by getting him ample wide receiver help. Aiyuk is going to be coming off a torn ACL, but when he is fully healthy, he is a true threat.”

Trading Aiyuk would leave the 49ers with Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall to lead their receiving corps. However, they would be able to afford Purdy and add young receivers through the draft.
