Big Move: Lions Cut Players to Strengthen Squad for Big Match-HN

In a typical move reflecting their recent strategic adjustments, the Detroit Lions are once again shuffling their roster to maintain flexibility as they head into Week 18. This Tuesday, the Lions made the decision to waive rookie defensive back Morice Norris. With more players returning from injury, the Lions are proactively creating space to accommodate expected roster needs.

Just last week, the Lions made headlines by releasing defensive lineman Chris Smith, and linebackers Kwon Alexander and David Long, demonstrating their readiness to recalibrate for optimal team performance. During that same period, they also added Norris, brought in quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to serve as an emergency quarterback, and welcomed back linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin from the injured reserve list.

Smith and Alexander rejoined the team but on the practice squad, showcasing how the Lions are keen on retaining talent that aligns with future plans. Although David Long was picked up by the Titans, he didn’t pass the physical and currently remains a free agent. Interestingly, Smith made his way back to active duty for the recent game against the 49ers, playing a total of nine snaps.

As for Norris, while his contributions were limited to special teams in the game against San Francisco, his potential is evident. His skills make him a strong candidate for the practice squad, assuming he clears waivers, following a path similar to his teammates like Smith and Alexander.

Looking ahead, the Lions are eyeing potential returns from their injured ranks. Wide receiver Kalif Raymond, who began his 21-day evaluation period last week, practiced fully but was not activated for the 49ers game. There’s optimism around his potential activation this week.

Moreover, linebacker Alex Anzalone is reportedly making significant progress in his recovery, and there’s speculation about him returning to practice soon. Lions coach Dan Campbell shared his thoughts on Anzalone’s status, stating, “We’ll see.

He’s doing well. He’s close.

He’s really close.”

The Lions continue to navigate the challenges of the NFL season with sharp foresight, adjusting their roster to not only respond to immediate needs but also to build for the future.
