BIG UPDATE: Lions Cut Ties With 5 Players Immediately After Playoff Loss -kid

The Detroit Lions have officially started their 2025 offseason planning. After going 15-2 and securing the No. 1 seed in the NFC, Detroit was sent home in the Divisional Round. The Washington Commanders defeated the Lions 45-31.

The season was a massive disappointment but the ride continues. They are turning their attention over to the future and made a couple of roster moves on Monday. According to the Lions’ official X page, they signed 11 players to Reserve/Future Contracts.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell speaks to members of the media at the Detroit Lions practice facility in Allen Park on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, following his team’s NFC divisional playoff loss.

The list includes QB Jake Fromm, WR Tom Kennedy, OT Jamarco Jones, IOL Kingsley Eguakun, DT Chris Smith, EDGE Isaac Ukwu, LB Abraham Beauplan, LB DaRon Gilbert, CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver, S Loren Strickland, and S Erick Hallett.

Lions News: Lions Sign 11 Players to Reserve/Future Contracts

While they retained 11 guys, the Lions opted not to sign five players who ended the year on the practice squad: WR Maurice Alexander, LB Kwon Alexander, RB Jemar Jefferson, TE James Mitchell, and WR Donovan People-Jones.

Detroit clearly liked what it saw from those 11 players, as they will have a chance to compete for a spot during minicamps and training camps.

It isn’t surprising to see vets like Alexander, Jefferson, Mitchell, and Peoples-Jones moved on from. They didn’t have roles on the team and the Lions would prefer to keep players with more upside.

The Lions team in 2025 will look different for sure. On Monday, it was announced that Ben Johnson is going to become the Chicago Bears head coach, set to match up against the Lions twice per season.

Aaron Glenn is another coach on the staff who is not expected to be around next season. It’s time for the Lions to officially turn the page and seek to rebuild this team for another run next year. This season didn’t go the way Detroit imagined, so the next couple of months will be key for rebuilding the roster and coaching staff.
