The San Francisco 49ers brought back Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator after missing the playoffs this season. They could target some new players for him in free agency.

The 49ers could be losing Charvarius Ward in free agency and could target a veteran corner to replace him. SportsGrid’s Zack Cook predicted the team would sign Rasul Douglas of the Buffalo Bills.

“Rasul Douglas has established himself as a versatile force in the secondary, with his stats painting the picture of a true playmaker,” wrote Cook. “Whether it’s breaking up passes or snagging interceptions, Douglas consistently delivers on all fronts.”

Douglas is projected to earn a three-year, $35 million deal in free agency. He broke out when he was picked up by the Green Bay Packers in 2021. He became a crucial part of their defense before he was traded to the Buffalo Bills in 2023. Since 2021 he has 14 interceptions and he has returned three for touchdowns. He has racked up 261 tackles, two sacks, 45 passes defended and three forced fumbles.

Douglas could be a great asset for the 49ers. His ball skills could go a long way in getting their defense back today it was in the past. Douglas is going to be 30 next season and could be headed for a decline. However, his recent play seems to deny that. He could step in and fill the void left by Ward if he does leave in free agency.
